Tiger Spotlight
of the Week:
Mrs. Brittany Allen
Butte County Office of Education Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher
1) Why did you become a teacher? I actually fell into teaching! I originally worked as an ASL interpreter in Durham, but when the previous DHH teacher retired, there was a need and I stepped in. It ended up feeling like ‘home’. I just completed my master’s degree in Deaf Education this spring and I truly love getting to support and teach Deaf and Hard of Hearing students every day.
2) What are your hobbies and interests outside of work? Outside of work, I love spending time with my family. We enjoy waterskiing, snow skiing, hiking and traveling.
3) A fun fact about yourself or unique talent you possess, if any? I have been fluent in American Sign Language since early elementary school and have been a certified ASL interpreter for 20+ years.
4) Favorite book, movie, or music (pick only one to share) and why it is your favorite? I love 90s country and 80s rock! That music always puts me in a good mood. It’s fun, sassy and upbeat.
5) Favorite part about working at Durham Elementary School? My favorite part about working here is that I get to be at the same school as my own children. I also love our small-town community and how much it has embraced the DHH program here. The acceptance and support for our program makes it a unique and welcoming place to work.
